Count reps instead of time

In a circuit, you do not always think in seconds: "10 push-ups, 15 squats, 20 lunges" often makes more sense than "40 seconds of work". FitPacer lets you count an exercise in reps, do it at your own pace or within a time limit, and keeps your times so you can see your progress. Here is how.

Time or reps: which one?

  • Time (40 s, 20 s…): ideal for cardio, Tabata, planks, or whenever you want a set pace.
  • Reps: ideal for bodyweight strength exercises (push-ups, squats, lunges, pull-ups) where movement quality matters more than speed.
  • You can mix both in the same routine: for example 10 push-ups, 15 squats, then a 40-second plank.

1. Switch an exercise to reps

  • Open a Circuit / Tabata routine (or create one with the + button), then tap Edit.
  • Tap the exercise duration pill (for example 00:40), then "Count in reps instead". You can also tap the exercise name and choose "Reps" at the top of its sheet.
  • Set the number of reps (1 to 99). In the list, the pill now shows "× 10" instead of a duration.

2. Choose how it runs

At your own pace: no countdown. The number of reps is shown in large type, a small timer runs, and you tap "Done" when you have finished. Perfect for focusing on technique or for a goal like "100 push-ups in 5 sets".

Time limit: you set a duration (for example 15 squats in 45 seconds). If you finish early, tap "Done": the time left is added to the next rest, as in an EMOM. If time runs out, the workout moves on. The overall pace of the workout stays as planned.

3. During the workout

  • On a rep-based exercise, the big central button becomes "Done ✓"; you can also tap the big number. The right-hand button becomes "Pause".
  • The voice announces the exercise ("10 push-ups, at your own pace"); there are no 3-2-1 beeps since there is no set end.
  • During the rest, the screen shows your time ("Push-ups: 10 in 24 s") and, with a time limit, the time you saved.
  • If the screen was locked, it unlocks on these exercises: you need to be able to tap "Done".
  • Tapped "Done" too early? The left arrow takes you back to the exercise, which is only counted once.

4. Track your progress

At the end of the workout, FitPacer shows the average time of each rep-based exercise and the difference with your previous session: "Push-ups · 3 × 10, 24 s on average, −4 s". Doing the same number of reps faster, with good form, is a real sign of progress.

The routine length, shown with a "~", is first estimated at 3 seconds per rep, then adjusted to your real times from recent sessions.

Our tips

  • Start at your own pace to learn your times, then switch to a time limit with a 10 to 20-second margin.
  • Pick a number of reps you can do with good form until the last set: quality before quantity.
  • When every set becomes easy, add 2 reps or cut the rest, one change at a time.
  • Rate how the workout felt: FitPacer will suggest a harder or gentler version based on your answers.

Good to know

  • Reps are available in the Circuit / Tabata template. HIIT and the Custom template stay time-based.
  • For weight training with loads (sets × reps × kilos), use the Weight training template instead: it lets you log the load of each set.
  • Your routines and times sync across your devices if online backup is turned on.
