Sophrology was created by neuropsychiatrist Alfonso Caycedo in the 1960s and is widely practised in France. Dynamic relaxation is its core exercise: simple movements, each followed by a quiet moment to notice your body's sensations.

Steps

  1. Stand comfortably, breathe into your belly
  2. Shoulder shrugs, then notice the sensations
  3. Gentle head rolls, then notice the sensations
  4. Pump your arms toward the sky, then notice the sensations
  5. Torso rotations, then notice the sensations
  6. Picture a pleasant moment, then come back

Tips

  • Movements are slow and never forced
  • Keep your eyes closed if you feel steady
  • When noticing sensations, simply observe without trying to feel anything in particular
