Run / walk: the method to start (or restart) running

Alternating running and walking lets beginners run without burning out. You gradually increase running time and reduce walking, until you can run 20 to 30 minutes straight.

Who is it for?

For complete beginners, people returning after a break or an injury, and people who are overweight.

Steps

  1. 5 min walking warm-up
  2. 6 repetitions: 1 min easy running, 2 min walking
  3. 5 min walking cool-down

Tips

  • Run at a pace where you can still talk
  • Three sessions a week, with a rest day in between
  • Each week, add 30 s of running or one repetition

Precautions

  • If you are returning after a long period of inactivity or have a health condition, ask your doctor first
